Not quite, if you don`t have host, pick up equipment slowly walk into the overshield (or any power up for that matter) holding RB (B on Bumper Jumper) and if you do it correctly, the equipment should switch out with power up. When you die, it will spawn over your X. He just happened to stick you. He must`ve done the trick. and you picked it up on accident.

It is a glitch he was carrying the oversheild as equipment you can do that look it up on youtube
